 From October to November 2013, Greeners Action sent out investigators to seven districts in Hong Kong to conduct a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire survey is about the habit of the citizens using red packets. The seven districts are Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon Bay, Tai Po, Tai Wai, Mongkok, Wong Tai Sin and Tseung Kwan O respectively.

According to the Mid-year Population for 2012 released by the Census and Statistics Department, the population sample are extracted based on age group. 808 citizens have participated in the questionnaire. 569 of them (70%) have the habit of giving out red packets during Lunar New Year. According to the survey, in those 569 respondents who will distributed red packets, 40% gives out not more than 40 and 60 red packets. Other respondents give out various numbers of red packets. 4.6% respondents give out 160 red packets or more during the Lunar New Year.

The questionnaire survey was carried in a random based which interviewed citizens on the street detailedly. All the data collected can reflect an accurate number of red packets used by Hong Kong citizens. According to the survey which shows that 37,000 red packets were used by the 808 respondents, it is estimated that in 2013, the number of red packets used by Hong Kong citizens nearly reached 320 millions, which means that totally 16,300 trees have to be cut down.
