Every day in Hong Kong, there is about 3,200 tonnes of food waste to be disposed of at landfills, 70% of which come from household. The Greeners Action has been keeping track of the problem and suggesting related measures to the government. We actively explore ways of dealing with household food waste problem and finally figure out a new technology – Bokashi, which can effectively resolve the problem.
The Greeners Action pushed forward the “Bokashi food waste recycling pilot scheme” in estates previous month. Participating families needed to separate food waste, adding Bokashi for fermentation, then mixture was buried into farm soil. It is found with the green technology, food waste decomposed quickly. Three weeks later, most of them have been decomposed. Four weeks later, all of them have become nutrient of soil. We call on the government to plug existing loophole of household food waste policies. At the same time procure adequate Bokashi and food waste containers for people to buy and use, related classes shall be organized for enhancing knowledge of food waste treatment.
