Full implementation of plastic bag levy scheme, Greeners Action promoting levy details in market
The full implementation of plastic bag levy scheme was in effect on 1st April, 2015. At that time, about 200 markets would be under monitoring, as in wet market there are some selling of foodstuff in non-airtight packaging making difficulty thus confusion in distinguishing the exemption items. In view of this, the Greeners Action organized “Knowing more about plastic bag levy in wet market” parade, which covered 60 markets that would be told about the common knowledge of related product Eco-responsibility regulation, helping them to get used to it.
The Greeners Action, since 5th February, 2015, has gone through 30 wet markets, having contact with near 1000 stall owners to answer their enquiries about the plastic bag levy. We found near 40% of them misunderstood that the levy would be towards the government pocket but actually the charging of not less than $0.5 per plastic bag is not going to count as public revenue. Also, many of them misunderstood market is not under the scope of the levy scheme or the enforcement turnout to be in favor of the supermarket, increasing their hardship in making a living.
