The volume of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong has increased dramatically by 80% over the past 30 years, but population growth has only increased by 36% over the same period. We strongly urge the government to prepare ancillary facilities before implementing the plan of 'Waste reduction and recycling, landfilling and incineration' to engage the public in waste reduction. The government should show its determination to reduction waste with specific measures, but not rely on the ultimate waste treatment facilities and slow down the progress of waste reduction at source.
Our organization, together with Friends of the Earth (HK), the Conservancy Association and Green Power, will launch a online joint signature campaign on the 16th of May.
