 Greeners Action, Friends of the Earth (HK), the Conservancy Association and Green Power have jointly demanded the government to pledge to adopt six measures before applying for the appropriation bill of landfill expansion and incinerators to the Legislative Council in order to show its determination of waste reduction.

The environmental groups have asked to government to adopt six measures of waste reduction at source to earn back the confidence of the public in the government before building ultimate waste treatment facilities such as landfills. The six measures include: adopting municipal solid waste charging scheme no later than 2016; encompassing various materials into the Producer Responsibility Schemes; reviewing the Construction Waste Disposal Charging Scheme; prohibiting the sending of food waste and other recyclables to the ultimate treatment facilities; announcing the details of recycling fund and formulating supporting policies for the recycling industry; requesting to the Legislative Council to expand the landfills by phrases, so that the public could monitor the waste reduction progress of the government (for details please refer to the attached joint declaration).
