Greeners Action has sent representatives to the 8 chained supermarkets in different districts in Hong Kong this July in order to investigate the phenomenon of over packaging of fruit and vegetables. The 8 chained supermarkets are AEON, Taste, city'super, YATA Department Store, Wellcome Supermarket, Vanguard Supermarket, PARKnSHOP and Kai Bo Food Supermarket while the investigated districts cover Cheung Sha Wan, Mongkok, Kwun Tong, Tai Po, Wan Chai and Tuen Mun. The investigation mainly focuses on 10 common fruit and vegetables, which are apple, banana, cucumber, lemon, lettuce, Longan, mango, papaya, potato and tomato. It is found that the 8 chained supermarkets have different levels of over-packaging towards these 10 investigated fruit and vegetables.

Within all the investigated supermarkets, Kai Bo Food Supermarket has the best performance as only 2 samples were packaged out of 8 while the overpackaging rate of other supermarkets like Wellcome and PARKnSHOP reaches 70%. Furthermore, the overpackaging rate of fruit and vegetables of the YATA Department Store even reaches 100% and that of city'super reaches 95%. It is seen that they are using plastic packaging abusively.

Meanwhile, both city'super and AEON appears to have different packaging(some were packaged while some were not) towards the same kind of fruit or vegetables which makes one doubt their standards of packaging fruit and vegetables. For more details, please refer to the press release .
