“Bring Your Own Bottle” to reuse cleaned containers
Every day, Hong Kong produces 1,694 tons of waste plastic. At the beginning of the year, mainland China has started the “Operation Green Fence” campaign which has tightened up the testing standards for imported waste so that a lot of plastic waste are not able to be imported to China. At the same time, since many local waste recyclers are unwilling to take care of these wastes, they are stuck in Hong Kong without proper treatment. Occupying a lot of space and being difficult to be decomposed, plastic waste has caused a lot of environmental problems in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, a controversy has been raised as the government proposed earlier the plan of expanding new landfills, with the intention to solving the arising risk of the three strategic landfills being full by 2015. In view of this, Greeners Action has promoted a campaign called “Bring Your Own Bottle” (BYOB) which allows citizens to bring their own bottles to get refill when they purchase liquid cleaning products and encourages reusing containers to reduce waste.
