Greener Action held a launch ceremony of the Food Waste Reduction Program in the Tuen Mun Town Plaza(tmtplaza) today (3rd July). The program has been co-organised by the Tuen Mun District Council, the Environmental Protection Department and Greeners Action. A series of activities will be held to facilitate and encourage citizens’ and venders’ awareness of reducing food waste and also develop the community a habit to reduce food waste. There are 18 restaurants in tmtplaza and K-point participating in sorting and recycling food waste at source. They also have food waste recycling bin in the kitchen to collect post- and pre- food waste. Food waste from part of the restuarants, such as Cafe de Coral, Crystal Jade, The Spaghetti House, DONDONYA, Beppu Ramen, Yummy Handmade Sanuki Udon Restaurant, Shanghai Min, Aeon, Spaghetti 360, Morihachi Kitchen Tamago and Mos Burger, will be delivered to the Pilot Composting Plant (KBPCP) at the Kowloon Bay Waste Recycling Centre (KBWRC) for intergrated treatment and synthesizing into fertilizer. Other food waste will be processed by the composting plant in the tmtplaza. It is estimated that 100 tons food waste can be prevented from the landfills within half a year.

Mr Elvis Au, Assistant Director of the Environmental Protection Department, Mr Chan Wan Sang, Chairman of the Environment and Hygiene Committee of the Tuen Mun District Council, Mr Lui Leung Ying from Tuen Mun Town Plaza, Mr Wen Ko Fai from the K-point, Mr Augus Ho, the executive director of Greeners Action, and the representatives of the restaurant, presided over the launching ceremony. On the stage, they demonstrated eating all food on the dishes to deliver the message of not wasting food.

At the same time, the ceremony also marks the start of the Tuen Mun District’s “Clean it up, get a prize” program. Starting from July 4 to August 31, citizens who upload photos of dishes with no leftover to our Facebook page and receive the highest number of likes will get an attractive reward.
