Greeners Action launched the Bokashi Food Waste Recycling Scheme in Siu Lun Court in Tuen Mun. 30 families participate in the first round of the program and each family was distributed a food waste collection bucket and some yeast. Every day, they have to collect their food waste in the bucket and add an appropriate amount of yeast to the bucket. Then, seal the bucket for producing organic fertilizers which will be used in the garden of the court. Meanwhile, the fluid produced during fermentation can also be used for cleaning toilets or drainages.

The scheme has attracted many media and has been widely reported. The fertilizers produced was appreciated by one of the participating families while another participants, who grew vegetables using the the fluid produced by the food waste, said that the effect of the food waste fluid was amazing: the vegetables grew properly and quickly. Also, a participant claimed that the amount of waste she had to disposed reduced to a half after she started to collect food waste.

This scheme has proved that farmland and food waste disposal are closely related. Hong Kong produced 3,500 tons food waste every day. There is an urgent need for more farmland to further process these food waste. We hope that the government can invest more resources to come up an effective solution for the food waste problem in Hong Kong.
