There are 13,817 tonnes of waste being disposed of everyday in Hong Kong, the amount is as much as 4.5 standard Olympic swimming pool. Greeners Action is going to organize visiting tour for members and friends to the Tseung Kwan O landfill site on 14th Jul, 2012 so to know about the problem of waste in Hong Kong. Participants are interested parties, Good Counsel Catholic Primary School teachers and students, total there were 50 people joining the visiting tour.
Environmental Protection Department staff first introduced the problem of waste in Hong Kong and operation of the landfill site, participants actively raised questions. Then, we took shuffle bus to visit the site and the how waste was dumped. Further, we opened the door and smelled the odour from the landfill site. Every one learned and experienced a lot from this visit.
Every day there are over 1,000 garbage cars unremittingly entering and leaving the Tseung Kwan O landfill site, the expense of dealing the site’s waste is as high as 1.65 million dollars, 30% of the methane gas collected from the site would be used to produce renewable energy for its operation, the remaining will be wasted by burning. In face of the increasing amount of waste, should we only relying on the use of incineration or extending landfill sites, but neglect the primary need of waste reduction at source?
