After conducting food waste survey in 2006 and 209, the Greeners Action again conducted random survey in areas having many restaurants this year June, successfully interviewing 988 citizens to learn more about the change in their eating habit and intention in dealing with food waste. It showed the situation of wasting food had improvement, 30% of citizens interviewed could finish dishes with no food remain, over 90% of them supported recycling of food waste. The result is encouraging, we further urged the government to speed up the solving of food waste problem.

The problem of food waste is disturbing, but effective solutions have not been figured out yet in previous years. In 2010, 3237 tonnes of food waste is disposed of at landfill in Hong Kong every day, equivalent to the weight of 129 double-decker buses, which takes up 40% of Municipal Solid Waste dumped. Greeners Action found in this survey 31% of interviewee could finish dishes with no food remain when having meal outside, compared with only 10% saying the same in 2006, there is a significant improvement trend. It shows people are developing “Food Wise” habit after instilled the need by community groups.
