First school to implement “Bokashi food waste recycling system” pilot scheme 15th March, 2012
According to EPD’s figure, Hong Kong produces over 3,327 tonnes of food waste every day, equivalent to the weight of 129 double-decker buses, which takes up 36% of Municipal Solid Waste dumped. Greeners Action’s survey also found 10 tonnes of food waste is produced by primary schools in Hong Kong every day. We, through organizing “Food Wise campaign”, encouraged and educated students to cherish resource in developing green eating habit to reduce food waste.
Greeners Action implemented with the Good Counsel Catholic Primary School the “Bokashi food waste recycling system” pilot scheme for more than 4 months, hoping to reduce food waste to the landfills from schools. Under the scheme, schools would transfer the food waste from the lunch to the fertilizer, and then it would be applied to rooftop plantation. This enables students to practice applying fertilizer to plantation, experiencing sustainable organic living.
