According to EPD’s figure, 3,237 tonnes of food waste is produced in Hong Kong every day, equivalent to weight of 129 double-decker buses, accounting 36% of municipal solid waste. The Greeners Action reckons from surveys that all primary schools in the territory produce 10 tonnes of food waste, we think through implementing “Food wise scheme” could encourage and educate student to cherish resources, putting into practice habit of “Green diet”, so to prevent producing food waste.
The Greeners Action also cooperated with Good Counsel Catholic Primary School to implement “Bokashi food waste recycling pilot scheme” for 4 months, hoping to reduce large amount of food waste generated from schools that will end up in landfills. By turning food waste into compost using green roof of schools, students could learn how to apply compost in plantation or arboriculture when they could feel the sustainability of organic lifestyle.
