Based on the latest Monitoring of Solid Waste in Hong Kong Report, Hong Kong produce more than 9,114 tons of municipal solid waste per day, in which 1,941 tons are plastic waste, reflecting the plastic recycling is not effective as expected, causing pollution and wasting precious landfill space. The recently announced Policy Address stated that the waste recycle rate need to raise from 52% to 55% in 2015. In order to improve the recycling rate, Greeners Action and Environmental Protection Department co-organized the ‘Mobile Community Recycling Shop’ program, to set up booths in five different communities, aiming at educating the public about waste recycling information and set up recycle points, to gradually establish public habits of waste recycling and reduction.

For the solemnity of the event, today (16th October), Greeners Action held a kick-off ceremony for the ‘Mobile Community Recycling Shop’ in Kowloon Park. Dr. Kitty Poon, Under Secretary of the Environment, Mrs. Audrey Eu Yuet-mee, SC, JP, Executive of Yan Oi Tong Mr. Lo Tak Ming and artist Mr. Kelvin Kwan were presented. Guests kicked start the program by putting different recycle items into the ‘Mobile Community Recycling Shop’ recycle box, to import the massage of reducing waste and supporting activity. Ambassador Mr. Kelvin Kwan also exchanged with the public about the experience of daily recycle and played with the audience to bring out the idea of community recycle during the launching ceremony. After the ceremony, all the guests immediately visited the booth to promote the idea to the public and assist the public to recycle for gift and to understand the operation of ‘Mobile Community Recycling Shop’.
