Hong Kong people dispose about 3,200 tonnes of food waste every day in which around 1,000 tonnes of it come from industrial and commercial sectors. The Environmental Protection Department is planning to build an Organic Resources Recovery Centre (ORRC) in Siu Ho Wan. It handles 200 tonnes of industrial and commercial waste daily and would start operation from 2004. Therefore, the Environmental Protection Department held “Recycling Food Waste Partnership Programme” with Greeners Action since June 2010. It aims to promote catering industry, supermarkets, malls and food factories to sort food waste at source. After collecting the food waste, they would transfer the waste to the composting plant in Kowloon Bay and then turn them into fertilizers. At present, there are more than 15 participating industrial and commercial groups, recycling and dealing with over 400 tonnes of food waste.

In order to promote the culture of reducing food waste in citizens’ everyday life, the Kwun Tong District Council, the Environmental Protection Department, Greeners Action and Sun Hung Kai Properties would be organizing a two-year programme called “Kwun Ting District food Waste Reduction Campaign”in apm since July. It can increase the understanding of citizens and the catering industry in Kwun Tong District about reducing and recycling food waste. Therefore, we can join hands to create a community which has no food waste. Its opening ceremony was held in front of the guests in apm on 11st July.
