“Food wise day HK” will be held every Wednesday, with over 220 eateries participating in it.
Last year, Greeners Action successfully launched first ‘Save Food Day in Hong Kong’, successfully attracted attention of community and media. The government also proposed for the first time in policy address solutions to food waste. In 2008, Hong Kong people discard over 2,995 tons of food waste per day, accounting for more than one-third of municipal solid waste, reflecting serious food wastes issue. Although the government food waste recycling plant locate in Siu Sha Wan is going to open in 2013, it can only handle 200 tons of industrial and commercial waste daily. Other than that, the government has not yet perfected the supporting or solution of extraordinary food waste problem associated with ‘Food Paradise’ in Hong Kong. Greeners Action believes that reduction at source is the most effective and direct to deal with food waste issue in Hong Kong, survey from Greeners Action also discovered 91% of the the respondents support the ‘Save Food Day’. In view of the result, from 3rd March onward, the ‘Save Food Day’ will be expended to more than 220 restaurants every Wednesday.

Different types of restaurant respond to ‘Save Food Day’ with hotels being participated in the first time
‘Save Food Day’ received overwhelming response, with a total of 54 restaurants/enterprises and more than 220 stores participated, more than double compare with last year. In addition to the support of fast foods chain, Hong Kong-style restaurant, Chinese and Western and Southeast Asian restaurants, the program also gained supported from hotels (a total of 15 restaurants under Sino Group) for the first time, expanding the event to the different types of restaurant. Every Wednesday, the public can go to participated restaurants (see the attached table), to patronize designated food and take the initiative to request ‘less rice’ and reduce their 1/3 portion of their rice. The public will receive a $1 discount and stamp, and collect 4 stamps to participate in the lucky draw to win prizes. Greeners Action hopes throughout this program, the public will be much aware of problem of food wastes in Hong Kong, raise their awareness of cherishing food, and rebuild the Chinese virtue of ‘cherishing food and clothes’.

Today Greeners Action held the ‘Save Food Day’ opening ceremony in Olympian City, and invited Acting Secretary of the Environment, Dr. Kitty Poon, Chairman of Panel on Environment Affair, Ms. Audrey Eu Yuet Mee, Chairman of The Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trade Limited, Mr. Anthony Lock, Chairman of Association of Restaurant Managers, Mr. Howard Lo Ho Man, Executive Directors of Sino Land Company Limited, Mr. Sunny Yeung Kwong and Director, Mr. Nicholas Yim as officiating guest for kick off ceremony. The guest held a large rice bowl and tore off one third of the amount of food waste on the bowl, hoping the event can start off with the idea of ‘less rice’. Save Food Ambassador, Mr. Eric Suen and Kay Tse also attended the event to show their support. In addition to sharing their personal experience of saving food, they also bought out the message of cherishing food through games and urged the public to support those participated restaurants.

Chairman of The Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trade Limited, Mr. Anthony Lock explained, The event was great success last year. It proved that as long as the industry is willing to participate and support, with proper explanation and training to the staff, it will not affect the operation, as well as encourage the public to reduce food waste while building environmentally friendly image for the program. The catering industry should be indispensable to reduce food waste, and I hope more peer will support the program in the future.

Directors of Sino Land Company Limited, Mr. Sunny Yeung stated, Sino Group has always been a supporter of environmental protection, this year Sino Group again fully supported ‘Save Food Day’ by Greeners Action, We recruited nearly 30 hotels, commercial buildings and shopping mall, including Olympian City, Gold Coast Piazza and Citywalk in participating the program, hoping to carry forward the traditional Chinese virtue of ‘Save Food’. In addition, Sino Group has introduce the ‘Cooking Oil Regeneration’ program in 2008, until 12th September, Sino Group has successfully reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 85,000kg through this program. Executive Director, Mr. Nicholas Yim stated, Sino Group’s hotels are very honoured to be the first group of hotel restaurants to participate in the program, and receive great respond from 15 restaurants operated by four hotels, from inside to outside, to uphold Sino Group’s 4R Environmental Mission – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink. We actively promote the concept of environmental protection, whether It is the hotel’s exterior decoration, lighting, air conditioning, room management, catering and administration, etc., there are guidelines to encourage each guest and staff to take action, starting from small detail, to learn and support environmental protection.

Expected to reduce 1% of food waste, which can reduce 109,000 tons in year
Executive Director of Greeners Action Mr. Angus Ho Hon Wai stated, the issue of Hong Kong food waste problem, based on the waste at the source, therefore there is a lot of room to reduce food waste. ‘Save Food Day’ is aiming to reduce food waste at source rather than at the end. We encourage the public to order food just the right amount from Wednesday to everything, to avoid have eyes bigger than one’s stomach. Since many health- conscious citizens are now accustomed to calling ‘less sweet’ when ordering drinks, I hope ‘less rice’ will become the new trend for the citizen.

Greeners Action hopes ‘Save Food Day’ can raise public attention to the serious problem of food waste, through providing $1-dollar discount and lucky draw coupon to encourage the public to reduce food waste. The discount is only to provide incentives, while the most important target is to build public habit of ordering food without creating food waste. The program will help Hong Kong to reduce its daily food wastes by 10% equivalent to 300 tons, which can reduce 109,000 tons per year, and alleviate the environmental problem cause by landfilling.

The Shanghai government will promote green dining catering program throughout the city in May this year. In addition to encouraging public to order meals without creating food waste, the restaurant will also train staff to remind diners to cherish food and take the remaining food away while providing discounts. Greeners Action stated Hong Kong does not currently have a policy to solve food wastes effectively. In addition to continue to recommend food wastes recycling program to the government, Greeners Action also strengthen the implementation of ‘Save Food Day’ and promote to different groups, hoping to deliver ‘Save Food’ massage to different types of restaurants and universities.
