Greeners Action has been promoting ‘Save Food Campaign’ since 2006, to raise attention from the public about Hong Kong food wastes issues and to rebuild the virtue of cherishing food. ‘Save Food Day’ has so far attracted almost 170 restaurants to participate, hoping to develop the general public’s habit of cherishing food. It has been 9 months since ‘Save Food Day’ starting from February. In order to understand the public’s situation on reducing food waste, based on the surveys conducted in 2006 and 2009, Greeners Action again conducted interview with 340 diners in August and September this year.

The survey found out that 36% of respondents said that the portion of the meal was just right, reflecting that the restaurants has adjusted the portion size of food to reduce food wastes, but 28% still said the portion size was excessive. While specifically asked if the diners can consume the entire meal, only 19% of respondents stated that they could consume all the food, while 81% of respondents stated that they still have the habit of leftover: based on this year and 2006, 84% and 87% of respondents still have habit of leftover, the situation has only slightly improved.
