Plastic Reduction

Every year Hong Kong people dispose 9.6 billion plastic bags at landfill sites, which has gradually saturated the landfill sites and seriously affected our daily life. To reduce wasting natural resource and pollution, the Greeners Action since 1999 has been dedicating in campaigns of plastic bag reduction. An example is the organization of the first “No plastic bag day” held on 15th April, 2006, which raised successfully concern of various sectors, in order to urge the government to enact the plastic bag levy scheme as soon as possible. By years of hard work, what we are long is upcoming. The legislative council earlier has passed the bill for plastic bag as the first product in the Eco-product responsibility Ordinance. As, it is relating to every people’ daily life, Hong Kong will enter a new green age since 07th July, 2009. To heighten public awareness, we will conduct a series of educational and promotional campaigns (for example: parade in 18 districts). Today, 23rd May, 2009 is the date when 45 days before the implementation of the scheme 7th July, 2009. We are going to cooperate with the Link estate property management to hold the first promotional campaign “Prize for plastic bag levy scheme” opening ceremony.

In the opening ceremony, representative of the Greeners Action Ms. Karen Hung and representative of the Link estate property management limited Ms. Kong Po Yan and singer Mr. Ryan Hui, green ambassador Louis Cheung together held the opening ceremony by tearing game cards and putting them into recycling bin, which symbolized the support to the scheme for green city. Ambassadors played games with people, teaching them on how to distinguish which types of plastic bag and which types of retail need charging.
