Every year Hong Kong people dispose 8.6 billion shopping plastic bags at landfill sites, seriously wasting natural resource and causing pollution. The Greeners Action has long been concerning about the problem of plastic bag abuse in Hong Kong since 2002 and educating people to reduce or reuse plastic bag through promotion, an example is the success in pushing ahead of “No plastic bag day” in 2006. In previous year, the Greeners Action, for the first time, cooperated with 12 shopping malls under Link estate property management limited, to hold plastic bag recycling campaign. It is inspiring that over 110 thousand plastic bags have been recycled within only half year. To continue this habit, we will hold the campaign again this year, the participating shopping malls increase from 12 to 50. The campaign’s aim is still to instill recycling value into the community, encouraging people to support recycling through actions in order to cherish natural resources.

To aloud the campaign, the Greeners Action today (26th February, 2009), held the “Reload of recycling plastic bag over the territory” opening ceremony in Tsz Wan Shan Plaza which is under the management of the Link estate property management limited. We invited the Secretary for the Environment Kitty Poon, the representative of the Link estate property management limited Ms. Kong Po Yan and vice chairman of the Hong Kong Plastic Bags Manufacturers’ Association Mr. Lau Chi Leung as guests, together with green ambassador Wong Wan Choi and actress Ms. So Shan they put the triangle-folded plastic bags into recycling bin, and called the slogan “Reducing and recycling plastic bag make our environment better” for the opening ceremony. Wong and actress guests later gave their shows and played games with people to spread the green message. After the opening ceremony, we set booths to teach people how to upcycle plastic bags to make funny things.
