Plastic Reduction

Greeners Action is always concerned about the environmental problems caused by umbrella plastic bags and has launched the "Umbrella Bags Reduction Accreditation Program" for the 7th consecutive year since 2017. We are committed to assisting and encouraging different properties to use umbrella water removers and other facilities to replace plastic bags on umbrellas.

This program has been attracting more and more attention. The participating properties have reached record highs. This year, a total of 303 properties participated in the program, a 36.5% increase compared with last year.

Greeners Action announced the program results today (21st September, 2023) and awarded the best performing property management companies. There are 251 properties that stop providing umbrella plastic bags and received the Diamond level, which is 1.5 times more than last year.

Besides, there are 34 properties receiving Gold level, 11 properties receiving Silver level and 10 reduction awards. This year, 67 properties received "Special Order Reduction Awards", in addition to last year's 55 properties. A total of 118 properties have pledged to be "zero umbrella bags" from now on.

Following years of efforts by Greeners Action, the government finally submitted "Product Eco-responsibility (Amendment) Bill 2023" to the Legislative Council last year. It proposed regulating certain disposable plastic products including umbrella plastic bags as early as the end of this year.

Apart from conventional methods such as umbrella water removers and exclusive recycling bins for umbrella plastic bags, some properties have tried to integrate new technologies into their daily lives, like introducing new "mopping robots", assisting with hydrophobic floor mats, floor blowers etc. It shows that the industry is well-prepared for the legislation, and pleased to work together to protect the environment.
