The regulatory legislation on single-use plastic products has been in effect for six months, and the subsequent six-month adaptation period, which commenced on 22 April 2024, is about to expire. The catering sector represents one of the most critical frontiers for single-use plastic consumption. Under this new statutory framework, it is imperative to evaluate whether the majority of restaurants have successfully finalized their operational transitions to halt the provision of single-use plastics for dine-in services, thereby advancing the overarching goal of reducing global plastic pollution.

To assess compliance, Greeners Action conducted comprehensive on-site audits between September and October across 157 restaurants spanning Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. The scope of this investigation encompassed both major corporate food chains and small-scale independent eateries, aiming to map out the current usage patterns of single-use plastics in dine-in settings and provide empirical data analysis to guide future implementation strategies for Phase Two of the legislative roadmap.
