The government published in February the 'A Food Waste & Yard Waste Plan for Hong Kong 2014-2022', in which it is pointed out that 3,3337 tons of food waste are generated every day in Hong Kong, and the volume of food waste produced in one year is tantamount to that of 100,000 double-decker buses. Also, according to the survey carried out by the Consumer Council in 2013, 60% interviewees would mostly buy the staples at supermarkets. However, the profit-oriented supermarkets are still trying to keep themselves out of the issue, doing nothing but making every effort to attract more customers by various marketing means.

Starting from February this year, Greeners Action has begun to research more than 40 waste reduction policies at 20 supermarkets in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore. The supermarkets implement different waste reduction policies proactively. In contrast, our local supermarkets lag behind in this regard. Greeners Action suggests local supermarkets follow their examples to reduce waste reduction and put the Food Wise Charter into practice.

Research results have revealed that apart from food donation, the major supermarkets in these five countries have others measures which are worth following for Hong Kong supermarkets, including posting leftovers recipes on webpages, stepping up waste reduction promotion by publications and in-store promotion, contacting suppliers proactively, improving the packaging of food and reducing shelf stocks.
