The current situation of wasting food in Hong Kong is highly critical. In 2011, 3584 tons of food waste were produced every day and it accounted for 40% municipal solid waste in Hong Kong. Wasting food does not only waste money and resources but also poses higher pressure to the landfills and damages the environment.

In view of this, Greener Action, collaborated with the students from the Associate of Arts in Communication and Public Relations of the Community College of City University , has organized a Food Waste Fighter project. We hope that through the pop-up activities in the pedestrian zone of Causeway Bay today (February 2), we can encourage the public to leave no leftover during the Lunar New Year, so as to avoid wastage and have a new start on treasuring food. Citizens also signed on the “No leftover” signing board made of red packages to promise that they commit to waste less food.

The Lunar New Year is coming. There will be a lot of occasion to gather and dine together with our families, friends and colleages. In order to promote “No leftover” in Hong Kong, members from FWF will hold booth on the street from 2nd to 3rd February. The booth is called “No Leftover Year and Year” and the members will encourage passersby to avoid having leftover while celebrating the festival and enjoy a food-treasuring and eco-friendly Lunar New Year. Apart from this, the booth also has a “No leftover” signing board for citizens to sign after reviewing whether he has treasured food over the past year. Through signing on the board, citizens promised to support “No Leftover”. In addition, citizens can interact with the members by answering a food waste themed question drawn on the spot.
