The Awards ceremony for the 1st batch of excellent food waste management competition in catering
In the July of previous year, the Greeners Action, for the first time, cooperated with a district council to run a food waste reduction campaign in Kwun Tong with the EPD and the Sun Hung Kai Properties. One of the campaign activities, the 1st batch of excellent food waste management competition has been successfully organized from Dec 2011 to March 2012, it aimed at encouraging catering to reduce food waste through taking green suggestions. Its awards ceremony was held today (11th Jul, 2012) in apm shopping mall to announce the gold, silver and bronze medaled restaurants as well as the one achieving the highest food waste reduction, and the “Favourite Green Restaurant “ openly voted out by the Kwun Tong citizens.
In Hong Kong, there is 3237 tonnes of waste produced every day. The problem is pressing as the newly-appointed chief executive CY Leung and Secretary for the environment KS Wong both publicly pointed out the food waste reduction commitment. In order to reduce food waste, the Greeners Action jointly organized the “Food waste reduction campaign in Kwun Tong” with the EPD, Kwun Tong district council and Sun Hung Kai Properties in apm shopping mall, it aimed at holistically reducing food waste produced in the shopping mall. It included setting up food waste machines, promoting food waste reduction at source, holding excellent food waste management competition for catering, having sharing session of the programme and visits and the like to enhance knowledge of Kwun Tong citizens and catering industry in reducing and recycling food waste. Since one year’s implementation of the plan, 36 tonnes of food waste has been recycled, thereby alleviating the burden of landfills.
