Canteens in Hong Kong’s tertiary institutions produce as many as 45 tonnes of food waste every day, which is equal to nearly 100 thousand lunch boxes. In order to let students have a deeper understanding and experience on food wasting and its disposal, Greeners Action signed the “Reducing Food Waste Charter” with 11 institutions in March this year., and we even organized a “Save Food Ambassadors” Training Programme for them. The Programme provided theories and also practical activities, such as seminars about food waste in Hong Kong, food waste composting plant tours, study tours and frontline placement jobs in restaurants. There are over 40 tertiary students coming from different institutions, including The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education etc. We are happy to invite them to join the Roundtable Meeting for food waste problem. They would share what they saw and heard in the training with the government officials, Legislative Council members and scholars. After the meeting, they would receive a certificate and they even have chance to go to primary and secondary schools to promote the culture of saving food.
