Branches of 8 HK chain supermarkets investigated randomly to find out the situations of plastic packages of 10 veggies and fruits. The survey finds that cling film, polyfoam/plastic tray and polyfoam fruit web always use for decorating every single fresh product. Amongst 8 supermarkets, we found Yata, have 100% of investigated samples wrapped by plastics which make them be the worst supermarket. Following the second worst of ranking are Wellcome and Taste which has 9 out of 10 samples covered in plastic. Kai Bo performs very well in getting rid of single-use plastic, only 1 sample has wrapped.
The result shown that abuse of disposable plastic by chain supermarkets to fulfill its marketing reasons, not only generating the wasteload problem to landfill, but also forcing customers to burden extra disposal cost after implementation of MSW charging.

Greeners Action criticizes the wasteful use of supermarkets wrapping plastic on fresh products and urged supermarket to establish Plastic Free Zone providing more choice for customers. We encourage them to conduct internal audit helping supermarket to review the useless of packaging and shift to plant-fiber wrapping material is a good way to keep products fresh and reduce plastic, as well.
