Lai See Reuse and Recycle Program

Last year Greeners Action collected 2.2 million of used Lai See, after selected by The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, 1.46 million of reborn Lai See is available for the public. This year, there are over 150 distribution point, including schools, offices of District Councilors, non governmental organization, housing estate and The Jong Kong Jockey Club Off-course Betting Branch, in which The Hong Kong Jockey Club provide 60 Off-course Betting Branches all over Hong Kong as distribution points, in order to increase the participation rate of the citizens. Greeners Action believe that more citizens’ acceptance of reborn Lai See is rising.

Greeners Action also pays attention to the type of Lai See on the market every year, based on last year observation, it discovers that the Lai See printed by merchants all sizes have become more and more exquisite in the design of patterns, packaging and materials, in order attract business. Some merchants distribute Lai See as a package, and put several Lai Seal in hard cardboard, and wrap them in transparent plastic bag, resulting in excessive packaging. In term of materials, such as bronzing has become popular trend in the recent years. Flannels, cotton thread, inlaid stone, leather, plastic and Velcro, etc. are also common choice for producing Lai See. However, such excessive use of those materials will reduce the efficiency if waste paper recycling. In addition, Lai See with zodiac pattern is still commonly used, thus reducing the chance of recycle by public.
