 Every year, Hong Kong used 180 million brand new red packets during the lunar new year, which equals to the cutting of 9,000 trees . This year is the fourth year of Greeners Action’s Lai See Packet Reusing Program. Supported by 27 corporates, this year the number of spots of distribution of recycled red packets increases to 362, which doubles last year’s number.
The program aims at reminding citizens not to overuse encourage citizens to reuse red packets brand new red packets but trying to recycle and reuse the recycled red packets. A launch ceremony was held today(17 th February). The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, was invited as the officiating guest, together with the representatives of all the sponsors and participating corporates to witness the ceremony.

Starting from today to 2nd March, red packets collection boxes will be placed 362 locations all over Hong Kong such as shopping malls, housing estates, banks and hotels . This year the number of red packets collection boxes doubles that of last year, which means that it is more convenient for citizens to recycle their used red packets.

In addition to the local support, this year the program is also held in more mainland cities including Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hainan, Xi'an and 27 more region outside the Guangdong province. In the previous two years, the program was only held in Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Foshan. This year, through the six hotels under the Agile Property Holdings Limited, our program is stepping out of Hong Kong. We hope that more Chinese communities all over the world can also participate in this program in the future and they can spread the spirit of recycling to other regions and countries to form a new Lunar New Year culture. The used red packages collected in the mainland would be recycled and reused locally in order minimize carbon emission. it is estimated this year number of recycled red packets in Hong Kong will hit two million and it is very encouraging.

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, was invited as the officiating guest, together with Mr. Angus Ho, the Executive Director of Greeners Action and the representative from the sponsor of the golden packets, held the ribbon cutting ceremony to announce the start of the series of recycling activities.

The curds held by the guests were actually lunar new year decorations in shape of lantern, carp and coin, which were made of recycled red packets. The curds also implied a eco-friendly lunar new year. During the ceremony, Greener Action presented certificates to all the sponsors of the golden, silver and red packets , and also all the participating organizations.
