This year, MTR increased their fares again, resulting in an average 4000 million revenue annually. However, the environmental measures are deficient even earning a enormous profit. Each year, MTR dispose 55 toms Yupo paper to the landfills, which has caused a great waste and damage to the environment. Greeners Action urges MTR improve responding measures and recycle all the YUPO paper in order to fulfill the coporate social responsibility.
Earlier the month, Greeners Action had inquired Kenneth Chan Ka-lok, a legislative Councilor, and Lincoln Leong Kwok Kuen, the CEO of MTR, on the topic of the disposal of YUPO paper but no response was received. As a result, Greeners Action went into investigation and found that there are 7000 advertisement boxes over the 89 MTR stations (not include Tram stations) in HK. These advertisement boxes have two sizes (with 4 units and 12 units). Every year, nearly 300 thousand YUPO paper, which is sufficient to cover 2,255 soccer Pitches at Victoria Park. As each 4 units YUPO paper weigh 200g, it can be treated as 3.3 million plastic bottles were thrown away which have affected the environment seriously.
