It is believed that the Lunar New Year is a lucky omen for "new beginnings". The custom of Lai See is one of them. However, many people buy or receive brand new Lai See, only to use them once and then discard them. If each one weighs about 3 grams, 17 trees need to be cut down for one ton of paper, which is equivalent to cutting down 16,300 trees. This move not only wastes resources unnecessarily, but also increases the burden on landfills.
Greeners Action is continuing the "Lai See Reuse and Recycle Program" for the 14th consecutive year with the aim of reducing festival waste by reusing Lai See and other lifestyle products. The program is supported by 97 organizations this year, which will expect to collect more than 8 million Lai See for recycling and re-use. Public collection points are located throughout Hong Kong from now until February 27.

Kickoff ceremony is organized on 30 Jan, with the presence of Mr. Raymond Wong, Principal Environmental Protection Officer (Waste Reduction & Community Recycling), Ms. Simmy Mak, SVP, General Counsel and Company Secretary, Sa Sa International Holdings Limited, Ms. Josephine Tsoi, Deputy General Manager- Corporate Communications and Brand, Shell Hong Kong Limited and Ms. Carmen Wong, Assistant General Manager (Corporate Communication), together with around 100 guests participated. Greeners Action encourages public to recycle lai see packets during Lunar New Year, in order to reduce minimize waste, be prepared for the waste charging policy in future.
