Lai See Reuse and Recycle Program 2025, around 400 collection points available
Traditionally, the Lunar New Year is a time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. One of the customs of giving lai see envelopes is no exception. In addition to sending blessings to the other party, it also symbolizes a good omen of "new beginning". Therefore, many citizens buy or receive new lai see packets but often discard them after using them once. However, many discarded lai see packets are still clean and can definitely be reused. Greeners Action's survey in 2023 found that Hong Kong people produce 320 million red packets a year. Assuming each envelope weighs about 3 grams, 17 trees need to be cut down for one ton of paper. It is estimated that 960 tons of paper are needed to make lai see packets a year, which means that a total of 16,414 trees are cut down in Hong Kong.
Greeners Action believes that traditional customs can coexist with green and sustainable living. Therefore, organizing the "Lai See Reuse and Recycle Program" for the 16th consecutive year to enhance public's awareness on cherishing resources and reducing waste during the festival through the reuse of lai see packets. 4.5 million Reborn Lai See were distributed in the community before the Lunar New Year this year. At the same time, 101 participating organizations have supported the establishment of collection points after the Lunar New Year, hoping to collect about 10 million red envelopes for recycling and reuse. From now until February 27, citizens can recycle lai see packets at nearly 400 public collection points across Hong Kong.
“Lai See Public Collection Points”
After the event is completed, Greeners Action will screen the collected lai see packets and transform them into "Reborn Lai See" to be distributed to the public for reuse next year. Lai See Reuse and Recycle program has been helping companies achieve their ESG and sustainable development goals, including 12) responsible consumption and production, 13) climate action and 17) partnerships to achieve the goals.
