Greeners Action has launched the Lai See Package Reusing Program since 2010. Last year, 900 thousand red packets were collected and after careful sorting, 450 thousand red packets had been recycled and turned to be the “new” red packets. Starting from today, the “new” red packets will be distributed in 50 primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions and 20 housing estates or organizations. 1.29 million red packets has been recycled over the past three years since the program started (see table 1) which means that 66 trees were saved from be cut down while 17 thousand kilograms of carbon release has been reduced.

The response from the citizens to the Lai See Package Reusing Program is much more fierce this year. The 50 participating primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions totally ask for 120 thousand “new” red packets. Students who participate in the program promise to advise their parents to use the recycled red packets for their pocket money. Meanwhile, 280 thousand “new” red packets are requested from the 20 housing estates and organizations to be distributed to the residents or organizations’ staff. Greeners Action have also reserved 50 thousand “new” red packets which will be distributed to the public on 2nd February(Saturday) and 3rd February(Sunday) from 2pm to 5pm at the pedestrian zone in Causeway Bay and Mongkok respectively. In addition, citizens can also get the recycled red packets freely at Greeners Action (in the Lei Cheng Uk Shopping Centre in Cheung Sha Wan) starting from 21st January. First come, first serve.
