8 million of Red Packets are expected to be collected this year
Greeners Action has been promoting the "Lai See Reuse and Recycle Program" to promote recycle and use of lai see packets in order to reduce paper wastage during the Chinese New Year. Launched for the 14th consecutive year, 67 million of red packets- weighing 235,000kg (or 235 tonnes) were collected. If there are about 1,400 trees in Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui, the program succefully rescued 3,257 trees. This year, 97 organisation participated into the program and set up over 300 collection points.
Sa Sa Cosmetics Company Limited has been joining the program for the 10th year. Starting from the collection period, Sa Sa collected 8 pallets with over 100 boxes of Lai See. With each weighing 0.003kg (about 3g), it is estimated that Sa Sa has collected 799,795 Lai See packets, which was very close to 9 pallets, or 899,769 packets last year. The ultimate collection amount may be close to or even exceed that of last year.
